Leap Forward for Giant Corporation: Transformation of English Education Institute Industry in Korea

Abstract
Although the market size of private education in Korea is estimated, surprisingly close to 30 trillion won, any academic research on this huge market is rarely performed. This case is developed for class room discussion about English education institute industry in Korea; and it covers several issues including the competitive structures, the opportunities and threats, and the strategic alternatives of firms within the industry. The industry is facing new environmental changes such as the growth of e-learning market, the large-scale financial investments from big corporation into the private education industry, and the current government’s policies of strengthening the English education. In the past, firms in this industry has also experienced and adapted to the ups and downs due to the changes in external environment. Then, how do current environmental changes influence the English education institute industry in Korea, and what strategic alternatives can each institute find for survival and prosperity?
