Abstract
The development of digital technologies leads us to the ubiquitous computing environment that makes network available anytime and anywhere. Business firms around the world try to set foundation for the coming ubiquitous computing era, focusing on developing technologies and infrastructures in order to obtain a competitive position in this future potential market. One of the important business issues for ubiquitous computing is business convergence. Although ubiquitous computing community well recognizes that diverse industries need to combine their services to provide seamless communications for the ubiquitous computing, commercial efforts are rare yet. Lack of the experiences from commercial applications prevents business firms from actively investing in this new technology. This article describes a business case of MONETA, a mobile financial service of SKT. MONETA service is one of the recent attempts by SKT to commercialize ubiquitous computing concepts. MONETA service is developed as a result of business convergence between telecommunication and financial industries. SKT has experienced many challenging obstacles while they prepare for this ubiquitous computing service. Through the intensive interviews with people involved in the development of MONETA, this article provides important implications to the business community who is preparing for new applications for ubiquitous computing.
