The Development Strategy of K-POP through the Improvement of Digital Music Distribution in Korea

Abstract

The digital music market in Korea has grown significantly, replacing the traditional offline markets. With the rapid development of IT technology, digitization of content and the popularity of various mobile devices, the digital music market has grown continually. Digital music market revenue in 2010 was more than 620 billion, an average annual increase was 8.7% and increased 9.2% from 2009. Digital music is distributed through theses sites such as Melon, Bugs music, Olleh music(theses sites are digital music distribution sites in Korea), that the size of the digital music market is growing annually. And also the proportion of the sales of digital music in the entire music market is growing increasingly. In particular, with the success of the K- POP, Korean music attracted attention worldwide, but several problems have been found. So, it is necessary to improve the system of the digital music distribution in Korea with government efforts for the globalization of K-POP and the development of the digital music market. Therefore, in this study, status of the digital music distribution in Korea and problems of digital music distribution are discussed. Finally, some solutions and plans for improving the revenue structure and the digital music market activation in the digital music distribution in Korea are discussed.
