Global Negotiation Between Samsung C&T Corporation and Tesco PLC

Abstract
This case examines the process and conflict of global negotiation between Samsung C&T Corporation and Tesco PLC. In 1999, due to the Asian financial crisis, high cost of financing placed Samsung C&T Corporation into financial status of a step away from bankruptcy; accumulated loss during 1998 was approximately US$200 million. To overcome this difficulty, Samsung C&T Corporation began to restructure its business and decided to seek for foreign investment. At the same time, Tesco was also looking for partner that could provide strong local background as well as capability of creating synergy for Tesco’s regional network. Through the process of negotiation, Tesco aimed at sharing risk and resources with Samsung C&T Corporation which had the accumulated reliability and credibility in Korean market, and Samsung C&T Corporation tried to keep their undervalued assets under the situation of severe restructuring pressure and financial crisis. Through this case, we can examine the inside stories of global negotiation which are rarely opened to the public and help comprehension of the issues and practice of global negotiation.
