Abstract
This illustrative case study investigates the sources of the rapid growth of NTT DoCoMo in digital convergence era. NTT DoCoMo, spun off from NTT in 1992, is Japan’s leading mobile communications operator and one of the global leaders in advancing mobile communications technology. In addition to providing voice and data communications to millions in Japan, NTT DoCoMo creates global industry standards and leading-edge mobile multimedia services such as i-mode and FOMA, and won the DoCoMo brand global recognition. Through foreign investment in Asia, Europe and North America, and in strategic alliances with mobile and multimedia service providers in Asia-Pacific and Europe, NTT DoCoMo is expanding its global reach. The NTT DoCoMo story clearly illustrates the importance of managerial leadership, strategic transformation, technological and marketing capabilities, strategic vision and reconfiguration, and globalization in the path of growth of mobile communications company.
